Whatever Happened to Line by Line Veto of All Earmarks?

That’s what Democratic Senator of Wisconsin, Russ Feingold, is asking of Barack Obama. He is reminding Obama of his presidential campaign promise to not sign any bill with earmarks in it.

And when I’m president, I will go line by line to make sure that we are not spending money unwisely.”

But since entering the White House Obama has signed every piece of legislation which includes earmarks.

I understand the need for Congress to help their own districts but let it be in legislation that deals with that topic and not done through the back door. Don’t have legislation dealing with defense include some earmark for national forests or paying for the research of the sex life of a gnat!

But the worse of the earmarks are ones that are out right bribes for votes. Who can forget the $300 million that Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana got for her support of Obama’s healthcare bill. And the one that will go down in the history books is the bribe offered and received by Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska for his support of the same bill. He’s going to have the Medicaid expansion paid for his state for life.

Since the goverment is paying for that…..oh wait, WE are paying for that. We, the American citizens pay for all political bribes! Doesn’t that beat all?

Of all the promises that Obama made during his campaign, the promise of no more earmarks is pretty much the only one I really wanted him to keep. And considering he’s been notorious for breaking promises and doing what is in his OWN political interest, I’m really not surprised. His own modus operandi has been all about getting done what he wants done at ANY COST, even if it costs us, the American taxpayers.

So the rule of thumb is, whatever Obama promises, expect the opposite.
